A mid-air collision between an airplane and a helicopter has resulted in three fatalities. The incident occurred on Thursday shortly after 3:30 in the afternoon in close proximity to a runway at Frederick Municipal Airport.

The airplane struck the ground near a patch of trees at Frederick Community College. The R44 chopper landed about a tenth of a mile away from that site, between storage units.

The plane had departed from Cleveland, Tennessee and was headed to Frederick at the time of the crash. According to the Federal Aviation Administration, the helicopter was involved in training exercises.

The three individuals who passed away were reportedly all onboard the helicopter. They have since been identified as 47-year-old William Jenkins of Colorado, 29-year-old Christopher Parsons of Maryland and 35-year-old Brendan MacFawn, also of Maryland.

Two passengers inside the plane were injured during the crash but survived. Both of them have been treated at the hospital and released.

The National Transportation Safety Board has since taken over the investigation of the collision. Witnesses and nearby residents are left shaken by the occurrence.

Shari Fox, who lives next to the helicopter crash scene, stated “I heard the metal hitting metal, and I kind of thought it was a car crash. It was so loud it shook our house. The plane was..spinning, before it landed, and so was the helicopter.”
