Brazilian wandering spider: venom causes erections, but that’s no reason to be a dick toward it

What do you do if you see a Brazilian Wandering Spider while walking through a Bolivian forest? If you are naturalist and academic Jean-Luc Sanchez, you poke the spider with your finger and a stick.

In the video you see here, Sanchez is seen repeatedly jabbing at the spider. The spider raises its two front legs in defense -- behavior which Sanchez ironically describes as “aggressive.”

The Brazilian Wandering Spider, also known as Phoneutria nigriventer, has a toxin in its venom that is known to lead to spontaneous erections. Some researchers believe the toxin could lead to a new treatment for erectile dysfunction.

But is that any reason to be a dick toward the Brazilian Wandering Spider if you happen to encounter one in the forest?
