Professional organiser reveals her top tips for decluttering your home

A professional organiser has revealed her top tips for decluttering your home - including making an inventory of items and creating a yes, no and maybe pile. Chelsey Catalano, 30, claims if items are stored 'just in case' they are needed in the future the reality is they're not needed. She says the best way to declutter is by creating a vision for the space - thinking about what you would like the end product to look like. Chelsey also claims it's easier to sort items into categories instead of going room by room. She became a professional organiser in 2017 - launching her own business where she goes into people's homes and declutters and organises the space. Chelsey, from Toronto, Canada, said: "The reason I became a professional organiser is because people were asking what I am best at and what friends ask me for help with. "The answer is I am the most organised person people know and I always keep my things neat and tidy." Chelsey stopped her in-person service and realised that she is better at serving people and giving advice on the internet on apps like TikTok. Her top tips for decluttering the home include - always keeping sentimental items on display - as she believes they don't just belong in a box and if you are going to keep hold of them they should be displayed. She said: "Everyone is going to have a different approach to personal items - mine is that things don't belong in a box. "Make a deal with yourself that you have to display the item or have a plan for it. "I would recommend shadow boxes - a display case - and another tip for baby clothes is to make them into quilts." Chelsey has a rule that if something is being kept as a 'just in case' item then it's not needed in the home and has to go. She said: "Something you are keeping if you might need it for a rainy day isn't needed. "Like extra pots and pans - you know you have your favourites but for whatever reason, you keep other pots in your cupboard. "The idea is, if you can replace it easily and you are just keeping it just in case, you are probably better off getting rid of it." If you are decluttering the whole house, Chelsey said it is easier to go category by category rather than room by room. She said: "You have to correlate your items - baskets, bins, any container is your best friend when organising. "If you can sort things into categories - such as clothes, household items and books - it makes it so much easier for you to find things later and maintain organisation. "If you are looking to do the whole house, it is best not to go by room but by category. "Rather than doing your closest, think of it as doing your clothes, you might have a jacket and shoes by the front door. "It is easier if you look at the whole category at once rather than looking at a location so you can see your whole itinerary of items and deal with them all at once." Chelsey's top tips 1 - Create a vision for your home 2 - Correlate your items into categories 3 - Make an inventory of items 4 - Create yes, no and maybe pile 5 - Declutter by category and not room
